The government shutdown was a painful reminder of how quickly Native communities are forgotten in political fights.
Across the country, Native families are struggling as food assistance, healthcare and energy programs are being frozen or cut off entirely.
Here in Washington, more than 50,000 Native and Alaska Native neighbors rely on SNAP to feed their families. 6,000 Tribal families depend on WIC for nutrition and healthcare. 19 Tribes received $2.6 million in heating assistance last year to keep elders and children safe through harsh winters. When these programs stop - it puts Native lives at risk.
